please help with a biology practical? its about comparing co2 content of inspired and expired air!!!!?
Well i’m not really getting this experiment?
1) there are two flasks, both filled with limewater. There is a rubber tubing leading to the two flasks and a rubber bung stops any co2 from escaping.
2) there is a long open straw like thing in both of the flasks. You have to breathe gently in and out through the tubing.
3) one is supposed to have the limewater turned cloudy and the other i dont know..?
And what has this got to do with inspired and expired air? how does it determine the co2 content?
THANK YOU VERY MUCH. i would really appreciate any help! THANKS!!!! [i've got exams next wk NOOOO]
Okay, firstly, I think you mean ‘inhaled’ and ‘exhaled’ air.
The air you breath out contains more CO2 than the air you breath in, due to respiration forming CO2 as a waste product.
Limewater turns cloudy in the presence of CO2.
Therefore, when you breath into one of the flasks of limewater, the limewater will turn cloudy because of the CO2 content of exhaled air. The cloudier the limewater becomes, the more CO2 is being exhaled.
I’m not quite sure, from your description, what you did with the other flask, but if your experiment is similar to experiments I’ve done like this, then it would just be left as a control, to show the difference in colours between limewater that has reacted with CO2, and limewater that hasn’t.
Hope this helps, and good luck on your exams!
