Gauze Pads

Should I put a gauze pad over a scab?
I have heard to cover it and not to cover it. I put first aid cream on it. It was from a rug burn, and I heard material covering it (like clothing) could irritate it. So yea, should I cover it up?
I’m not a doctor, but when I got road rash recently I had a covering on it until someone told me to take it off, then I browsed the internet for a while and someone suggested putting petroleum jelly (also known as makeup remover, possibly. It’s an off-white kind of paste that resembles the consistency of sandwich jelly) on it to keep it moist. This immediate kept it from cracking and hurting, and I have virtually no scar now (the original wound was about as long as my hand all down my forearm).
The jelly does two things: keeps it moist (and hence keeps it from scaring too much) and the jelly is sanitary so it keeps germs out, like a gauze dressing would.
The only problem is that the jelly stays on your skin so if you’re wearing a long sleeve shirt some of it will rub off on the shirt creating a strangely colored stain. This will wash out, though. When I had to wear a white dress shirt I put a gauze pad over the jelly to keep it off my shirt, and I wore short sleeves the rest of the time.
